4 Trillion Return: Good Faith or Politics?

By: Agosu Omoleye In a dramatic turn of events, the former Governor of the Nigerian Apex Bank,  Godwin Emefiele, announced the return of four trillion naira to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Former CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele  This unprecedented move has elicited  various reactions among Nigerians. Some hail Emefiele as a hero for taking action against corruption, while others are skeptical about the motives behind this sudden return.  Firstly, it is essential to acknowledge the significance of such a large sum of money being returned to the anti graft agency. It is no news that corruption has been a longstanding issue in Nigeria, draining the country's resources and hampering national development. Emefiele's decision to return such a substantial amount is a strong signal to corrupt individuals that they will not go unpunished. It also demonstrates a commitment to sanitize the system and recover stolen funds. However, this move raises several ...

THE NEW WORLD INFORMATION AND ECONOMIC POWER ORDER

By: Agosu Omoleye The global news stage especially after the covid experience has been flooded with Myriad of stories relating to the virus.  As we will recall, some theorists opined that the virus takes its root from Wuhan in China. Many stories and theories were proliferated in the media space especially the social media debunking the former claim while claiming that it was an American virus. Quite a lot of respected writers locally and internationally got submerged by the euphoria of this news and started reporting without knowing the concrete origin and research about the cure of the  the pandemic. A number of new media erred in their statutory functions during the pandemic and hopefully they will be able to stay relevant in the new world communication order. Misinformation and poor researches took canter stage and the gate-keeping concept of journalism witnessed brazen disregard. Tech giants took over the scene and had to control the online media to ...

MY JOURNEY DOWN THE CREATIVE CORRIDOR II

By: Agosu Omoleye I started out well on the copy desk and soon grew to become the copy head in no time although I had to pay my price heavily to achieve this mark. Constant drills from my creative head would not let even the dullest brain lag. Researches and days of in-house creative critiques before client presentation is still green. Much so that my mouth curls in a smile when the memories sweep in. I recall that fateful afternoon when I was served a creative brief and behold it was a client trying to penetrate the Nigerian market with software. Sage pastel is accounting software and does not look like any of the Brands I have worked on in my early days as a copywriter. I knew at that instant that I was in for some “fun time” with the big boss himself. It did not come as a total surprise because the MD did the same when I was to be interviewed. He gave me a curt good morning with a nod, slapped a brief on the table right in front of me and said “hey, let’s see how good you are w...

END OF AN ERA: SIR REMI OMOTOSHO GOES HOME

By: Agosu Omoleye  Angels truly exist among men. The day to day quest for survival and other socio economic factors has conditioned so many to behave in some manners. In the midst of all these, some have stood for what is right even when faced with unsavoury situations. They refuse to bend to economic or societal dictates by religiously adhering to moral principles. One of such men is Sir Remi Omotosho,  highly disciplined senior colleague to my father whom I met as a very young man in the early 2000's during my industrial attachment with Odu'a investment company limited. I recall how he would look at my small frame, smile and ask how am settling into the real world of public relations in the corporate affairs unit while training under Oloye 'Lekan Alabi who happens to be the current Agbaakin Olubadan of Ibadanland. Notable among the events that impressed me about Late Sir Remi Omotosho was the exit interview my father had with him while he was retiring from active service ...

Nipping Depression in the Bud Part One

By: Agosu Omoleye Folks, let us start this write up by sharing this story Late Pa Gamaliel Onosede told me in 2008 as a fresh writer before my interview with him. My first major personality interview actually. A boy went to the sea side early in the morning for fresh breeze and he saw the waves bringing Oysters to the sea shore. He wondered how he could save the beautiful Oysters and started throwing them back into the sea one after the other. Soon it was almost dark and an old man came to him asking how many of these creatures do you think you can save? The young boy answered and said 'At least these ones will be saved'. This is deep! We can not do it all but we can play our parts to heal the world. Read this line by line and we hope to educate someone. Media in recent times has been agog with a mirage of content bordering on clinical depression, cases of suicide, suicide attempts, drug abuse and many more prevalently among the youth. Recent statistics have shown that the yo...

The Emergence of API in Africa: Why Nigeria is Blazing the Trail

Long before the business landscape took a dramatic turn and processes became more defined and organized through modern innovations pervading the tech space, the word "fintech" or API rarely makes it into random business conversations. There was a total reliance on the traditional business models which is often characterized by its shortcoming of time wastages, unnecessary bureaucracy, and general sloppiness in the business operations. Technological awareness is spreading across the African continent in this new business dispensation. The global business climate is already feeling the impacts of tech startups across the African ecosystem with their innovative ideas. As we celebrate the gains of tech advancement in the continent, some pundits are of the opinion that the API fintech is the next ground to break for tech players across Africa. The exploits of Onekiosk, kobo360, ComX, Paylink, and remita amongst other platforms in the digital finance space are indicators of the ne...

The Shift in Technological Paradigm and the Nigerian Realities

By: Omoleye Technology is a veritable tool to achieve deliberate, planned and sustainable developmental goals. It is the bedrock upon which every meaningful growth is built. The development of any geographical place is directly proportional to their efforts at improving their technologies  and applying same to their everyday life. It therefore can be summed up as a scientific knowledge for practical day to day purpose which is rooted in applied science. The first world nations of the world realized early enough, the importance of technology and its inherent benefits which is the reason why they are moving in leaps and bounds today. The Chinese and the Americans of today have invested a lot in technology and capacity building which translates into the success stories we see and hear from them. Over a couple of decades ago, the backward state of the Nigerian Technological involvement was responsible for most of the economic problems. The administrative processes took a lot of ...
